A Contemporary Tribute to Timeless Elegance
Nestled in the historic and artistic town of Hyères-les-Palmiers, Hotel Lilou stands as a testament to the revival of grand hotel traditions in a contemporary and luxurious setting. As an ardent lover of South France, I am thrilled to share my impressions of this stunning new addition to the region’s hospitality landscape.
By revitalizing a former 1890 hotel, the Hotel Lilou envisioned by David Pirone and designed by Studio Haddou Dufourcq is reviving the town’s grand hotel tradition in a contemporary version that setsthe stage for elegant, carefree vacations.
Hotel Lilou’s lounge and bar is designed as a remix of the winter gardens of the great 19th-century hotels. The white trellis on the walls pairs perfectly with a graphic fireplace that has a vintage 80s feel. The rattan sofas, re-editions of the iconic designer Gabriela Crespi, recall the ‘exotic and tropical’ style of the 1920s. The bar breaks down walls with its welcoming stools around a long, palatial bar, whose dapper bull poplar and shiny varnish are ever poetic and charismatic.
Luxurious and Thoughtful Room Design
The 37 rooms, spread across four floors, are a masterpiece of design, each exuding comfort and style. The long corridors in ochre and earth tones, lined with chequered carpets, lead to rooms featuring high ceilings and oversized mouldings that capture the sublime natural light. The decor reflects a modern winter garden ambiance, with straw elements and Moorish-inspired touches, paying homage to the architectural daring of the early 1900s. The rooms eschew televisions, encouraging guests to disconnect and embrace meaningful interactions.
A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Design
Hotel Lilou‘s outdoor spaces are equally captivating. The terrace, inspired by Hyères’ grand 19th-century mansions, features a Palladian pergola adorned with wide columns and traditional cabochon stone tiles. It provides a perfect setting for enjoying meals in a relaxed, holiday atmosphere. The lush garden, designed by landscape architect Damien Roger, is a verdant retreat with over 200 plant species, including a historic yucca. The white-tiled swimming pool, adorned with frescoes by Jacques Merle, offers a serene spot to soak up the Mediterranean sun.
A Celebration of Art and Culinary Excellence
Art plays a central role at Hotel Lilou, with pieces curated by Jean-Pierre Blanc, Director of Villa Noailles. The hotel features works from 14 artists, creating an eclectic mix of murals, photographs, sculptures, and ceramics that celebrate themes of holidays, travel, and carefree living.
The culinary offerings are equally impressive. The hotel hosts a ‘Guest Chefs’ series, inviting renowned chefs to present their culinary masterpieces. Chef Emmanuel Perrodin inaugurates this series, bringing a menu infused with Mediterranean inspiration and contemporary flair. The restaurant emphasizes local and seasonal produce, creating dishes that celebrate the region’s rich culinary heritage.
Hotel Lilou is more than just a place to stay; it is a destination that celebrates the art of living. From its meticulously designed interiors and lush gardens to its vibrant art collection and innovative culinary experiences, the hotel offers a luxurious retreat that honors both tradition and modernity. For those who share my love for South France and its boundless charm, Hotel Lilou is a must-visit, promising an unforgettable experience in the heart of Hyères.
