High on a cliff on Mykonos’ southeast coast sits The Wild, overlooking a small cove which was once home to “the Wild Ones”, the most fearless fishermen of Mykonos. Just a 25 minutes’ drive from Mykonos Airport and town, The Wild is off the beaten track.
Creative forces behind The Wild are the two brothers Alex and Philip Varveris, hailing from the Varveris family, leaders in the Greek design industry for more than 30 years with Moda Bagno and Interni, founded by their father Nikos Varveris. Travellers themselves and coming from a hospitable family home whose doors were always open, the Varveris brothers have always been fascinated by people, hotels and good taste. Opening a hotel in Mykonos was therefore the logical next step for them and together with Sofia Apergi and Matina Karava, they designed this unique retreat.
40 rooms, suites and villas are amphitheatrically set, facing the deep blue of the Aegean. Each accommodation – with 1 or 2 bedrooms, some with their own dining room and plunge pool – has its own distinguished style. Rusty tones, taupe and muted greys against naked pink-hued walls, waxed concrete complemented with lots of natural woods, fine tiles, rattan furniture, artisanal objects, terracotta pots and black-iron fixtures – in short, this place has a wonderfully warm, laid-back atmosphere.
The The Wild’s most magical place is its own secluded private beach – steep stone stairs are leading down a narrow path to the crystal clear, sparkling bay with comfortable sunbeds. And a little higher up is an elongated infinity pool with an impressive view of the Aegean. For those who don’t want to just relax: to the far end of the infinity pool you will also find a small open-air gym. And for those who strive for relaxation: there’s a small spa – where you can get pampered with an excellent(!) full-body massage in one of two private rooms – complete with a small hydro cave pool literally carved out of the cliff.
Embracing the slow food philosophy the tastes at The Wild are all about local produce and fresh ingredients cooked slowly with traditional techniques. There are two restaurants to delight your taste buds. The Taverna, simple and unpretentious, is traditional at heart and contemporary in spirit. Savoury and crispy pies made with handmade phyllo, fresh vegetables sourced from the island farms, local Myconian cheeses, and the freshest fish food. Curved on the rocks, with enthralling views to the sea, RAW, the new restaurant is a place to enjoy a fusion of Mediterranean and Japanese flavours, sourced daily by local fishermen and sushi prepared masterfully by Greek-Japanese chef Kazuaki Shitamori.
