Locke at Broken Wharf, the newest opening of Locke Hotels, is a 113 room boutique hotel in the very heart of the British capital, only minutes away from St Paul’s Cathedral and just across the Millennium Bridge from Tate Modern. Architects Grzywinski+Pons have reimagined the scale of an existing seven-story office building into a new hotel and hospitality space, where old meets newm business meets pleasure and the bright lights meet the river.
The low ceilings were employed to create taut, intimate parts of the public spaces even while celebrating the prodigious length of the plan and the opportunities to look clear across it. They layered canopies, designed mobile screens and enlisted structural elements in these expansive volumes to imply divisions and thresholds lest the scale mitigated the warmth and comfort within the tacit divisions of bar, lounge, co-working, cafe and restaurant.
The social space on the ground floor is intended to behave like connective tissue between London’s hard edge and the serenity of the Thames. The furnishings and fixtures and other materials within however are texturally lush, warm and inviting — translucent green onyx, suede, leather, wool and tweed upholstery, timber, jute, rattan, creamy terrazzo and limestone surrounded by succulents and ferns.
The idea is to live there like a Londoner: to meet local artists, designers and musicians at events, to join yoga and wellness sessions and mingle with locals, creatives and fellow guests in the co-working room. The co-working space features quiet desks with space to focus, super-fast WiFi and sofas for catching up and brainstorming.
Each of the spacious riverside studios has been designed to give space and serenity. The furniture is as comfortable as it is beautiful. The top-spec Smeg kitchen and designer cooking gear make eating in just as tempting as heading out. And the seamless technology means everything you need is only ever a tap or two away.
