Travel: Alpenloge – A Charming Hideaway in the Bavarian Alps

Opened earlier this year, the small boutique hotel Alpenloge is a charming little hideaway in the tiny village of Scheffau, framed picturesquely by the gentle mountain valleys of the Allgäu Alps. The owner Anja Engelke warmly welcomes us at the front door. We instantly feel at home when she shows us around the house and tells us the story about how she – the Hamburg-born woman and her Bavarian partner Michael Schott – stumbled upon a former school building from the 1930s and decided to take the plunge and convert it into a contemporary boutique hotel with nine rooms.

The result is a real gem – furnished with great attention to detail. Each of the spacious, light-filled room is different – painted in soft and warm colours. “I just like colours”, Anja Engelke smiles and indeed, colours are playing an essential part throughout the whole building. We stayed in Loge 3, a spacious suite with 48 square metres and a huge private terrace facing South-West offering unique views over the hills. The walls and doors are painted in a soft dark green by Little Greene, while the Norcombe wallpaper behind the bed with its floral pattern creates a subtle depth. The huge kingsize bed from Schramm Werkstätten with the most comfortable topper guarantees a good night’s sleep.

Breakfast and dinner are served either at intimate two-person tables in the lounge area or at long tables in a glass pavilion with stunning views towards the garden. For breakfast and dinner they provide the most delicious food, based on regional products, some with an oriental, Asian or Mediterranean touch. Breakfast is served at your table, which makes it a very relaxed start into the day without queuing at a buffet. Additional dishes (avocado toast, poached eggs) can be ordered anytime à la carte.

Each room is painted in a different colour – like Loge 1, a room accessible for the handicapped facing South-East.

The village of Scheffau is located close to Lake Constance and the mountains are within reach. We decided to go hiking at the Hochgrat (1.834m) which is just a 30min drive away.

After a day of hiking the little spa is a great place to relax and unwind. The relaxation room is flooded with light and has wonderful views from the deckchairs and the panorama sauna. It also offers a brine steam bath and a massage room.

So if you have a weakness for exceptional design and if you are looking for an intimate retreat surrounded by beautiful nature and run by the most charming and helpful hosts – Alpenloge is certainly the place to be.
